Description: We are pleased to offer this exquisite hand-carved Bronze image of a Meditating Ayutthaya Crowned Buddha, originating from a temple precinct in the historical province of Ayutthaya in north central Thailand. The relic was discovered amongst similar images of different sizes, buried in a chamber beneath the temple. The figure remains in its original condition as found, with stylistic considerations indicating an age of 100 years old or earlier. The figure is portrayed meditating in a seated or 'Virasana' pose, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The left hand rest on his lap, while the right hand forms the 'Bhumisparsa' mudra, 'Calling the Earth to Witness' gesture. The symmetrically arranged figure is dressed in royal regalia, modeled with a somewhat plump profile, covered by a smooth clinging diaphanous garment, which covers the left shoulders. As with crowned images a jeweled necklace rest from his shoulders, decorated in a floral motif, with further ornamentation in the form of embroidered jewelry, rosettes, bracelets, armlets, and anklets. The face with indigenous characteristic, depicts a serene meditative expression with down-cast incised almond-shaped eyes open, arched eyebrows join in the middle above a prominent nose, and well shaped lips with a smiling mouth. The head is adorned with a 'Mukuta' style crown, surmounted by a domed-shaped 'Ushnisha', and which terminate into a gem radiant finial. The crown itself is ornamented with projecting flanges at both sides, and incised wire-like designs across the front of the crown. At the back, below the major band is a plate covering the lower part of the head, bearing intricately carved floral patterns. Cast in the lost wax method, the bronze alloy is rather heavy in weight, naturally aged in a dark brown patina, with green malachite developing on the surface. The core with in the bronze consist of a tempered sandy-clay mixture, which is typical in Ayutthaya images.Data Observation: Excellent condition, with minor surface wear. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item. Significance: Typical of Sacred Temple Relics the figure was primarily cast from 'Copper' (90%) and 'Tin' (10%), obtained from the smelting of sacred metals and religious artifact fragments. Several holy minerals were then added in completing the purity of the metal - for instance black mercury from Laos, Nampy Steel from Prasaeng pond in Utaradit province, and the most sacred and important rare mineral was Chaonamngern (Blue Metal) found only in some heavily wooded areas in the mountainous regions of Thailand. In addition, prior to the actual manufacturing of these sacred figures - magic letters and drawings are created according to ancient holy scriptures, established by master Buddhist Monks; along with extensive ceremonial prayer, practiced by the gathering of several temple monks. After production of the Buddha - they are blessed and consecrated through infinte virtues and supreme meditative powers.
