ABOUT:This is an awesomely heavy solid sterling silver serving piece in the Chrysanthemum pattern by Durgin mfg. This pattern dates to 1893 and was designed by George A. Muller. Durgin was absorbed into Gorham in 1905.Love the Chrysanthemum pattern with flowers up and down both sides of the handle, and where the decorations go down into the spatula portion. Has a single initial monogram on the handle.MEASUREMENTS:The spatula measures about 9 3/8" in length and is VERY S...TURDY. This piece weighs a hefty 145 grams on my little digital scale. The pieceis especially thick made with more than usual solid sterling silver especially in the spatula where the flowers are applied (not punched or impressed like repousse work) so this pattern holds some of the higher density silver pieces I’ve seen. MARKS:Marked "Sterling 925/1000 Patent" with the script Durgin D amidst the back designs, the fork is also marked with the retail stamp of one the high end stores of the time.IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:This is in estate condition with quite a bit of scratching and deeper utensil marks / nicks here and there as seen in the photos as well as all over surface wear from use and polishing. I also see some stubborn tarnish spots in the spatula. Quite a few linear scratches on the back from use where it rubs against the dish. Also some scratching on the back of the handle in the smooth areas. This piece still has very crisp decoration. I don't see any damage to the floral details, it is the smooth areas where the wear is made more evident by the mirrored finish.The piece has held its shape well. No bends, dings or dents because it is such a sturdy and heavy piece.But I deal in estate sterling so due to age, my disclaimer as always - Please note this is not in mint condition. Has been hand polished but retains some patina in the background so the high relief designs really stand out.
