A large and fine 18th century French sundial in original case. The face is nicely engraved with acanthus leaf foliate designs and a single latitude hours scale in large Roman numerals. Original glass and blued steel needle with brass mounting. Compass and gnomon are fully functional and the entire piece retains a nice intact patina. Wooden case was made for the dial and is covered in black leather with brass hinge and clasp, and lined in black velvet on the interior.
