This is a magnificent antique crucifix. It is elegant with a highly detailed corpus on an impressively embellished cross. The cross is etched with a beautiful floral motif along the arms, each of which is capped with fleur de lis, representing the Trinity. The base is rectangular with what we believe is an image of a pelican feeding her young (the image has lost definition with age).The pelican symbol is based on an ancient legend that a pelican will strike her breast to feed her young... from her own blood in times of scarcity. This image has long been used as a symbol of Christ the Redeemer shedding His Blood for us.Dimensions: 26” tall x 16” wide on a 7” x 5” base
