Being offered is a very nice and old antique Native American spear or lance. This piece measures 80 3/4” in total length. This piece came from the UK where it had been in the family since the late 1940’s. This is a nice looking spear. I’m unsure if this is a 19th century lance made pre occupation or if it was a late 19th to early 20th century reservation made piece. In either case, it looks great and has a lot of interesting features. First is ...the spear head. It looks like an European lance or spear head like the kind you might find in the Southwestern US in the late 18th to early 19th century. The lance has a thick midrib along with a thickened point and a round ferrule. The pole is wood with a very nice patina. There are 3 sections of decoration. At the top you have what looks like Buffalo fur with a red textile above and below it and then two strands of long braided hair. Could be human or horse hair. I’m unsure. There is also a bird feather attached to a string of the red textile. Below that at the midsection of the spear is another decoration similar to the top. It is Buffalo fur with red textile and braided hair. At the bottom is more Buffalo fur with red and yellow textile. The bottom of the spear tapers down to the end. Another interesting feature is that around the mid section where you would grip this thing, the pole has been carved flatter on the backside which gives you a better purchase than if the wood would have been left round.
