The image is a ~106 Year old cigarette card (a.k.a. tobacco card) issued in 1913 by the IMPERIAL TOBACCO COMPANY (of Great Britain & Ireland) for W.D. & H.O. Wills, depicting the “ALPINE COLUMBINE".Unlike modern, computer generated images, these cards are miniature works of art, with a patina and richness that only comes with being i...n existence for over 100 years. The condition of the card is Very Good and it is framed in a brand new, custom made frame. The series is titled: ALPINE FLOWERS. The image up for auctionis No. 42 of 50 “ALPINE COLUMBINE". The back of the card contains a brief description of the depicted flower. Botanical illustration has been an important art form for centuries. Illustrating plants' colour and detail is a beautiful blend of art and science.Botanical illustration reached a peak of popularity in about 1600 to 1900. This was an exciting era of exploration and discovery. Crew members often included botanists, plant collectors and commercial gardeners.
