This antique Chinese dragon gold couching figural embroidered opera robe costume dates from the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. It is made of a faded orange color silk damask weave fabric, with gold metallic thread couching embroidery work, which tiny red stitches hold the couchi...ng work together giving it a contrasting copper color appearance and colorful hand embroidered Chinese figures, butterflies, bats and beaded decorative accents. There are eight gold dragons, flaming pearls, decorative grid pattern designs and waves of water along the bottom all done in gold thread couching work. There are a variety of colorful embroidered Chinese figures dressed for celebration perhaps the Chinese New Year with the Chinese zodiac animals appliqued along the bottom. This lavish theatrical opera costume Imperial dragon robe has a loose fitting long mid length style with front side tie closures, long full exaggerated wide kimono sleeves and is fully lined in a blue silk fabric with Chinese calligraphy characters inside. The robe measure 42 inches long, with a 52 inch chest, 52 inch waist, 30 inch long sleeves and 19 inch wide sleeves. It is in fair as-is condition needing some restoration with several loose, frayed gold thread couching embroidery work, fade discoloration staining on the fabric and the inside silk lining has several frayed splits inside. This is truly an amazing piece of antique Chinese opera textile wearable art!
