Click images to enlarge Description Antique Chinese 19th century Qing dynasty carved Bamboo tall Scholar’s Brush Holder finely hand carved in high relief with Chinese Star-god of Longevity Shou-lao. The standing immortal is carved wearing long flowing robes, with a smiling and benevolent expression on his face. He is holding a long staff with a double gourd, with peach tree branches with large peaches and leaves at the back and a boy at his side climbing rocky cliff, and holding a large peach in his right hand. Shou Lao and is also called Shou Xing, Shou Hsing, and Nan Ji Xian Weng. is the three Daoist Gods of Fu (Good fortune) Lu (Prosperity) Shou (Longevity). Hi, is worshipped since at least the second century B.C. According to Legend, Shou Lao began as a star in the southern constellation Argo, and he is sometime referred to as the Old Man of the South Pole. He is easily recognizable by his oversized forehead, representing wisdom, and his extra-long beard, which is meant to literally demonstrate a long life. Shou Lao is always depicted holding a long staff, double gourd and a peach, both symbols of longevity. CONDITION: In good overall condition showing its age and usage with dark brown patina, except for the chipped staff head and vertical age crack near the base (as common in old wood) All of this is an aspect from a used antique wood object that is over 100 years old.
