Exceptionally rare and original, ca1850’s Native American Sioux Indian Bead Decorated War Paint Pouch. This outstanding mid 19th century Sioux Beaded Paint Pouch measures approx. 5 1/4" long (not including the remnants of the fringe at the bottom edge) and 2" wide. It features four lobed flaps at the top edge and retains significant remnants of yellow mineral pigment paint on the inner surface. The pattern of beadwork is very similar to that seen on a large Sioux Tobacco Bag.
&nbs...p; This wonderful Sioux Paint Bag is sinew sewn with beadwork panel at the bottom edge and a vertical lane of beadwork extending to the opening at the top. This pattern gives the Pouch the look of a miniature Tobacco Bag and is typical of mid 19th century Sioux War paint Pouches. The beadwork is executed using colors of chalk white, greasy yellow, red white-heart, dark blue and pea green.

This exceptionally rare and original, ca1850’s Sioux Bead Decorated Paint Pouch is in very good condition. The body of the Bag is well preserved – the hide is supple and sound with no damage or repairs of any kind. One of the lobed tabs at the top of the Pouch has a very old, thread sewn repair and another of the loped tabs is somewhat stiffened. There is soiling and spotting to the hide as one would expect on a 170 year old Paint Pouch and the interior surface has significant residue of yellow mineral pigment paint. The beadwork is beautiful and well preserved with the only loss being to the delicate beaded border on the lobe tabs at the top of the Pouch. The rawhide fringe on the bottom edge of the Paint Pouch has significant loss as can be seen in the scans below.
