Offered for auction is this antique Detroit Straight Sided Coca-Cola Coke Bottle, a rare find. It is in very nice condition. The Detroit Coca-Cola Bottling Company first appeared in Detroit in 1902 and like most franchises, they utilized some form of a straight-sided bottle. By 1913, the Coca-Cola Co. wanted to standardize their bottles. This led to the development of the instantly recognizable hobble skirt bottle. It was patented in 1915 but did not fully enter the market until 1917. ...One might surmise that many Detroit straight-sides Coke bottles are out there, as they were bottling for over 15 years. However, Coke collectors know that this is not the case. Hearsay history that’s been oft repeated is that the manager of Detroit Coca-Cola, William Young, Jr., very specifically ordered that all Detroit straight-sided bottles be meticulously retrieved and summarily destroyed. These bottles are such a rare find, giving merit to the story about their history. It seems the only ones that pop up on occasion are found by scuba divers in the area around Harsens Island. The Detroit Coca-Cola franchise operation was small. In fact, between 1902-1917, the Detroit City directories indicate that the bottling operation was carried out at 467 Second Street, which was a residential address. At the time, there was a large, two story garage that was accessible from the alley between Second & Third Streets which was located behind the home. It may be appropriate to refer to this one as a “Garage-Alley-Coke” bottle as well. This is a rare opportunity to own this desirable Detroit straight-sided Coca-Cola bottle.
