Date: Circa:9th Century AD: - Thetford Area:Size: overalllength from hammer butt to blade 23 cm: weight at 2.08 KG:Norse axes are commonly referred to as... battle axes, howeverthis is a misleading statement / description: Many Norse axes [as tools], wheremultifunctional and whilst ‘an axe’ could be used in a battle environment, manywere multifunctional: This large axe is not a battle axe [although it couldhave been used in this way], but rather a heavy timber working example: Itcould have been used to wedge split planking from a felled and seasoned oak: Itwas probably employed in ship building and general heavy timber refinement[including felling]: A large and heavy Norse period example with a set of fullmakers marks seen: The heavy thick rear butt of the axe would also of made anexcellent mallet type hammer for timber driving, perhaps assisting in rampartconstruction: Condition: VeryFine:Some oxide removal has been employed to assist withrevealing the makers marks: The axe has not been waxed so that we canappreciated the raw nature of the oxide development:Provenance: The axe-hatched was recovered in a rural agricultural context in 1996close to the village of Croxton [East Anglia], which is very close toThetford: Thetford is possiblyrelevant as it was here that The Great Heathen Army camped in thewinter of AD 865 and this date is contemporary with this axe: seepicture 10 for details:
