Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:27425173 | Country/Region of Origin: United States |
Featured Refinements: Ships Chronometer | Time Period, War: WWII |
Type: Ship's Clock |
This auction offers a bonus second brass ring, which is similar in appearance to the first ring, but has slightly different thickness and screw hole sizes as compared to the first ring. This second ring is does not attach to the wooden box since the side holes in the ring have a different diameter. This sec...ond bonus ring is therefore being included solely for potential use with some other suitably fitting chronometer box.
The aforementioned second ring is merely a separate bonus item, and is included just in case it may be useful with some other chronometer box or clock.
Only the wooden box and gimbal rings, which are shown in the auction photos, are included in this auction.
This chronometer box housing and gimbal rings are designed for a mid-size ship's chronometer clock, possibly for an English chronometer maker.
Note for comparison that this mid-size chronometer box and gimbal ring are slightly too-small for the Hamilton Model 21 chronometer, and too large for the Hamilton 22 chronometer.
The box Exterior measures 7.25 x 7.25 inches in width and depth, and 6 + 5/8 inches in height.
The box Interior for the bottom tier measures 6.25 x 6.25 inches in width and depth.
The 1st Brass Gimbal Ring, the one mounted in the box, is in good condition, with only some light scratches and minor oxidation.Ring Outer Diameter: 14.1 cm (5.5 inches)
Ring Inner Diameter: 13.3 cm (5.25 inches)
Ring Height: 1.6 cm (0.63 inches)
Max Dist Between Screw Post Shoulders (max dist between clock side mounts) : 10.5 cm (4.13 inches)
The 2nd Brass Gimbal Ring (bonus) , shown in the last auction photo, is in good to fair condition, with light scratches and some oxidation. The circular portion of the bonus ring is very close in size and dimension to the gimbal ring for the Hamilton Model 21 chronometer. The main difference is the screw thickness and screw lengths are different than those of a Hamilton ring.
Ring Outer Diameter: 14.3 cm (5.4 inches)
Ring Inner Diameter: 13.3 cm (5.25 inches)
Ring Height: 1.8 cm (0.71 inches)
Max Dist Between Screw Post Shoulders (max dist between clock side mounts) : 11.3 cm (4.45 inches)
The Wooden Box is in good to fair cosmetic condition, with the wood exhibiting some shallow scratches, dings and marks, primarily on the top lid of the box. (See photos).
The 2 sets of box Hinges are securely mounted and all work correctly.
The box has 2 sets of box Latches, both of which are securely mounted and work correctly.
The box Side Handle hardware is complete, is securely mounted, and both handles swivel properly. When the handles are lifted they will stop at approximately 90 degrees to the side, as per their intended design.
The Square Viewing Glass is clear and is in very good condition, with no apparent scratches, cracks, or chips.
Only the wooden box and 2 brass gimbal rings are included in this auction. No chronometer clock, nor any other parts are included.
This nicely preserved chronometer box will be carefully packed for safe delivery.
