This 8-by-10-inch vintage* male nude beefcake photograph by LES DEMI DIEUX dates from the early 1960s and features the muscular physique of model RICHARD BENNETT in a beautiful and sensual outdoor composition. Richard Bennett
Several images of Bennett were featured on the covers of and within many issues of Young Physique magazine throughout the early 1960s. Unlike the studio's usual greaser-era New York street youths, Bennett, who was the photographer's most popular model, was a classic artistic poser with the maturity and chiseled beauty of a Renaissance sculpture. Surprisingly contemporary in his approach to both the male physique and photographic technique, the man that called himself "Les Demi Dieux" (which is French for "the demigods") was little known among collectors until after his death. Danny Fitzgerald's work appeared in beefcake publications like Demi Gods and Young Physique in the early 1960s, featuring popular models like Jerry Albanese, Richard Bennett and Vince Perri. But the images we have found to be most intriguing are those of Brooklyn street hooligans posing between their Buicks and against the chain links of the local basketball courts, or country youths posing deep in the back woods.
—Brooklyn Boys, our book on Fitzgerald, was released at the end of 2013 and celebrated with an exhibit at one of the most prestigious Chelsea galleries in New York City. Fitzgerald's partner and muse Richard Bennett was on hand with us to sign books at the opening reception. Condition
