Originating from the Russell Chatham estate. This 3/2 rod is in fair original condition with orange & black jasper silk wraps and double black tipping, a chrome stripper, all nickel silver screw uplocking seat that functions well, and a heavily soiled handle with hook damage to the lower ring. Two wraps need attention and one tip top is an agate casting style replacement. All sections are full length, straight, and have tight ferrules that need to be cleaned. There are normal age marks... and scuffing in the finish. The gray bag and black fiber tube are replacements..
Russell Chatham (1939-2019) was a world-renowned artist, writer and avid fly fisherman. He began fishing northern California waters for trout in his early teens. Within a few short years, he was expertly building rods, tying flies, and fishing for striped bass, salmon and steelhead along the western coast, often with the legendary fisherman Bill Schaadt (1924-1995). On June 21, 1966 Chatham landed a 36.6 pound striper that set the world record for a fly-caught bass. He pursued his love of fishing alongside his passion for landscape painting and was soon recognized as one of the best in the world at both. His paintings are held in private and public collections around the globe. His writing has appeared in publications like Field and Stream and Grey’s Sporting Journal since the 1960s, and he published his first book Striped Bass on the Fly in 1977. He went on to publish three more books: Silent Seasons, Dark Waters, and Anglers’ Coast, as well as produce over 100 acclaimed solo art exhibitions, his paintings featured on the covers of countless books. He continued painting, fishing and writing until his death.
