Offered here are 15 originalGerman cigarette cards of the German Reichswehr (the German military), issuedin 1933 by the Eckstein-Halpaus and Haus Neuerburg Cigarette Companies ofDresden for the album DieReichswehr (The GermanMilitary). Pictured here are: No. 102: A RadioPosition. Radio would be the best method for communication between headquartersand the front, were it not for the time-consuming need to encrypt and decipherthe messages. No.103: Mobile Radio Station. The High... Command is equippedwith a powerful and heavy radio unit that can be transported by motorizedvehicle or by horses, while lower level commanders in the field have portableradios that can be carried by a man. Raising an antenna mast can be done ratherquickly. No. 104: Building a Communications Line on Horseback. When building acommunications network speed is of the essence. For that reason, workers runthe lines while trotting or galloping on horseback. No. 105: Communications Station. Thetelephone exchange is the heart of the communications network. At the highercommand centers a dozen or more lines connect the front with the rearheadquarters. Even lower levelcommand centers are connected in such a way. No. 106: At the Barrack's Door. The number of volunteers for theReichswehr is ever growing and thus the selection criteria can be tough. Thebig question for many volunteers standing before the recruiting office at thebarracks is: Will I be taken? No. 107: RecruitsReceiving their First Uniform. New volunteers to the army receive theirfield-gray uniform, a steel helmet a side-arm and all the other equipmentneeded by the soldier. No. 122: Swimming as Survival Skill.Every soldier has to be able to swim by his second year of service and he mustalso be able to save others who are in danger of drowning. He learns theback-stroke, hand-over-hand stroke, side stroke and how to safely jump into thewater. No. 127: Sergeant Gerhard on"Rock". Dressur-training of horses has always been a strength of theGerman Army and the Cavalry School in Hannover is the top center for this, ledby Sergeant Gerhard. No. 129: FirstLieutenant Hax at the Pistol Range. First Lieutenant Hax is a world-classpistol shooter who has excelled at international competitions. He is one ofEurope’s best pentathlon athletes. No. 132: Lieutenant Altmann is Skiing Champion.Every two years the military holds its own ski championships in cross-countryand downhill. In 1933 Lieutenant Altmann and his team, the Munich Pioneers, took the cup. No. 133: Lieutenant Woerler Drives theWagon. The Cavalry School in Hannover also teaches the skills of drivingtransport wagons. Lieutenant Woerler, who leads this unit at the School, isconsidered one of the best drivers in the military. No. 134: On the March. A march has to beorganized so that the troops arrive quickly and in good shape at thebattlefield. If the situation demands it, a march can push the soldiers totheir limits. A march must try to remain out of the sight of enemyreconnaissance as well. No. 261:Semaphore. Radio communications are not always the fastest and best way tocommunicate during a battle. That is why signaling with flags is still in use. No. 263: Training with the Ship’s Guns.The heavy artillery of today’s big ships are usually found in turrets at thefront and back of the ship, each with three large-caliber guns. The smallerguns, such as the anti-aircraft guns, are found mid-ship or on the upper decks.No. 269: Free Time. During free hours on the ship the humor of thesailors finds expression.
