Very rare and stunningly beautiful, ca1910’s Native American Akimel O'odham / Pima Indian, hand woven, Covered Basket with outstanding, Turtle figural decoration on the lid.
This outstanding, early 20th century Pima Basket measures approx. 4 1/4" tall and 4 1/2" in diameter at the base.
This beautiful Akimel O'odham Basket is tightly hand woven and made of willow coils for the warp and with the weft made from soap tree yucca (tan...) and devil's claw (black) elements. The Basket is decorated with a simply fantastic turtle on the lid and a stepped terrace design on the sides.
The Pima Basket offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original ca1910’s Pima Basket crafted in the early years of the 20th century. This rare and very beautiful, ca1900 Akimel O’odham Covered Basket is in excellent condition. The weave is tight and there is no damage or significant physical wear to the warp or weft. The color is dark and bold and the Basket exhibits a rich and warm, age appropriate patina. The Basket has had no repairs and there is some VERY minor fading to the color of the turtle decoration on the lid. Overall the Basket is exceptionally well preserved and displays beautifully.
