Ervin Cottengim
Samuel Ervin Cottengim, 86, a current Joplin resident and a longtime Parsons, Kan., resident, died at 12:35 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at St. Joh...ns Regional Medical Center in Joplin.
He was born on April 12, 1921, at rural Mound Valley to Samuel Tilden and Ella (Darbro) Cottengim. He grew up at Parsons and attended Parsons schools. He graduated from Parsons High School in 1939. He attended Parsons Junior College for one year. He served in the United States Air Corps in the European Theatre during World War II, from 1942 to 1946, obtaining the rank of sergeant.
He and Mary Catherine Canfield were united in marriage on Jan. 15, 1944, at Altamont. She preceded him in death on July 13, 1997.
He moved to New Jersey in the early 1950s, where the family resided for several years before moving back to Parsons. He was employed by the Yale, Eaton, and Diebold lock companies as a lock technician his entire working career. He retired in the mid 1980s. He was a member of the First Christian Church, of Parsons, and the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704 V.F.W., of Parsons. He loved Parsons and Parsons history.
Ervin enjoyed people from all walks of life and had a gentle way about him. He had an unconditional acceptance of people regardless of their situation. He taught his family and friends that riches of the heart are far more important than material riches. He treasured every day he was blessed with regardless of how he was feeling. He had a God given talent for understanding people. His disarming, relaxed manner was unassuming that really enabled people to open up to him. He truly will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include one son, Merritt Cottengim, Joplin; one daughter, Jen Short and her husband, A. Bernard Short, DDS, Joplin; three grandsons, Brady Short, Joplin, Grant Short, Fort Benning, Ga., and Eric Short, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and companion, Frances Shepard, of Parsons. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Cottengim.
A celebration of life graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons with Rev. Mark Statler officiating. Burial will follow. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Funeral Detail. Friends may call the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons at their convenience.
Memorials are suggested to the Samuel Ervin Cottengim Memorial Fund and these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, 112 N. 26th Street, P.O. Box 942, Parsons, Kan. 67357.
