I am pleased to be selling a large varied collection to be listed over the next few months, fresh to the market of original go-to-bed vesta matchsafes, silver and figural novelty examples. This auction is for an early large size silver combination vesta matchsafe, cigar cutter and cheroot holder with internal striker. This one certainly ha...s alot going on with it !
It is hallmarked inside twice for London 1866. The maker is W.W. F.D. for William Thomas Wright & Frederick Davies of 370 Oxford Street, London.
Inside the lid it is marked 'Thornhill, 144 Bond Street, London', so this is the retailer in London.
So, the outside it is nicely engine turned decorated to all sides, and to the front is a circular cartouche with initials - I will let you decide on the lettering !The front opens (the larger side first) and inside is where you would keep your cheroots / cigarettes ?
The smaller side then opens and inside the lid is an internal striker and the cigar / cheroot cutter and this compartment would hold the cut off tips. Close the cutter side first then the larger side.
When the lids are closed the larger side does have a little bit of movement as you can see from the eleventh picture above.
Then to the back the lid flips back open and inside is where you would keep your matches, and still with some traces of the original gilding as in the tenth picture above.
Has a ring attached to the back with a chain with a stopper that fills the hole and a hook, you would pull this out and it would pull the alma / tinder cord out (you would have to supply your own) and this would probably have been passed around in a high class gentleman's club to light your cigar / cigarette. This would have been a really expensive piece at the time being retailed in Bond Street.
The top side has a ring and suspension ring so could easily be hung from your heavy watch chain - and it would need to be a heavy piece to hold this lovely combination piece as it weighs some 115.4 gms !
The piece measures approx. 8.5 cms x 4 cms with rounded corners. In good overall condition for age and usage, just surface scratches and a few 'dings' to the front and back, all to be expected with a piece of this age some 154 years old !

Would be a superb addition to any collection and would display extremely well, especially with other early silver examples, you just do not see many early silver combination examples like this one - with alot in a little box !

UK postage is Royal Mail Next Day Special Delivery. Packed very well to ensure safe delivery. There is possibly cheaper post on ebay, but not next day signed for, and unfortunately items can go missing if there is not a signature required, thank you for your understanding.
For overseas transactions ‘International Track & Signed For’ or 'International Tracked' delivery will be used, depending on the destination country.
