Very rare and very beautiful, ca1890’s Native American Plateau / Nez Perce Indian Bead and Quill Decorated Hide Flat Bag. This outstanding late 19th century Plateau Beaded and Quilled Bag measures approx. 8" wide and 9 1/2" long not including original rawhide handle. The bead decoration is stunningly beautiful and very well preserved and the Bag features thin, vertical lanes of quillwork on the reverse.
This wonderful Plateau Flat Bag features a front panel... being fully beaded with a traditional, geometric design. The bead work is executed using colors of Charlotte cut translucent red, cobalt blue, translucent pumpkin, medium blue, Charlotte cut black, Charlotte cut bronze and dark blue.
The back side of the Bag features vertical lanes of red and white quillwork which terminate at the bottom with beadwork lanes in light blue, dark blue and green colors.
The Bag is sinew sewn and cloth lined with a red wool, trade cloth border at the top edge. It features thin side panels which are bead trimmed and the Bag retains its original, rawhide thong handle at the top.

This very rare and very beautiful, ca1890’s Plateau / Nez Perce Bead and Quill Decorated Bag is in very good condition. All of the hide elements are well preserved - supple and sound but with surface soiling and some surface wear. The beadwork on the front panel is exceptionally beautiful and well preserved with no loss or damage. There is, however, some bead loss to the border that follows the seams between the side panels and the front and back panel as can be seen in the scans below. There is some loss to the quills and to the beading at the bottom of the quill lanes on the back of the Bag as can be seen in the scans below. All elements of the Bag are original and there have been no repairs or restorations. Overall this wonderful Plateau Flat Bag is well preserved - 100% original and 100% beautiful.
