White Star Line: A very rare portrait tin featuring the OLYMPIC in color on the lid and information on the upcoming BRITANNIC inside. The 4" long by 2.75 wide by .5" tall tin once held cigarettes and was sold onboard White Star ships during a few months in 1914. The dramatic portrait was used on many White Star Line promotional items. What makes this tin exceptionally rare is what's printed on the inside cover. "Triple=Screw R.M.S. BRITANNIC (50, 000 tons), The Largest Britis...h Steamer, Launched February 26, 1914."Work stopped at the Harland & Wolff Shipyard on the nearly-completed BRITANNIC when war broke out in late July 1914. In November 1915 the British Admiralty ordered her completion as a hospital ship. Just a year later she struck a mine in the Aegean and went down. This tin would have been sold between the BRITANNIC's launch in late February and the war's start on July 28th.Good condition with moderate wear to the paint.
