This enormous antique chef's or butcher's meat cleaver is as fine as any that was ever made proving once and for all that when American makers put their minds to it they made knives and other bladed items as well as anyone. It was made in upstate New York by the Foster Brothers company, once America's finest maker of knives, cleavers and other tools for the meat processing industry. It dates to the late 1800's or early 1900's and will, if properly cared for, last another couple of hundred years to scare your family for generations to come! It measures 16" long with a blade that's 10.75" by 5" and 3/8" thick at the hilt, tapering towards point, pommel and edge; heft is an impressive 32.7 ounces. Its carbon steel blade was hafted with beautiful, old-growth cherry handles over a full and tapered tang. Like all carbon steel knives, it must be kept dry, even during use, but this minor inconvenience is more than offset by the superb edge maintenance and performance offered by carbon steel, as any experienced chef or butcher over the age of 50 can readily confirm. Used to break down a large side or quarter of meat into more manageable or saleable cuts, it's the stuff of nightmares, unless you actually needed to use one, in which case it's a dream come true--as fine a tool as has ever been forged to do the job. Though used, both blade and handles are undamaged in any way, in excellent condition, as you can see in the photos. Best of all, it has been professionally edged for this sale to be RAZOR keen in a way that few have ever experienced. We urge the UTMOST in caution of the careless user may find himself in the ER needing to have a hand or foot reattached. If you can only pay via some other method, email us prior to bidding. International packages will be calculated on the basis of a MINIMUM ONE POUND weight. International packages cannot be insured and we cannot be held responsible for packages lost or damaged in transit (we pack very well, but shipping overseas is strictly at buyer's risk). Want tracking? You will have to pay an additional $13.65 for Registered Mail or you may upgrade to the option of Express Mail International. IMPORTANT: After TWELVE YEARS of doing everything we could to hold the line on int'l. shipping costs, we have taken our LAST loss, so we've been forced to implement a new policy in which Shipping costs on ANY international parcel sold for over $75 will now include a required $13.65 Registered Mail fee in order to make your purchase trackable. This is 100% non-negotiable. The cost will be factored into the posted shipping costs of any item that STARTS at $75 or more, but if you purchase several items, the charge will have to be added at the end.
