Mid 19th century sampler by Mary Herbert aged 11 - 1858. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower with a diamond motif and fruit bush on either side. There is a fruit basket beneath the central flower which has a butterfly on either side of the topmost fruit and a star motif on each side of the basket itself. Each star has a floral motif by its side with a d...iamond and flower to its left and right. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central swag with a floral swag above and containing Mary's details and the date of 1858. There is a bird and tree to each side of Mary's details then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep carnation border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, rather brown, and the colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks and some damage around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of timeMeasures 13" x across x 12 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
