YanoseyCopyright 2011128 pagesMorning Sun BooksAn examination of the complex map of the Lake Division - and the geography of the terrain it encompasses - will. help in understanding why the various component lines were built, why they were ...subsequently acquired by PRR, and the role they played in operations. The backbone of the division is the east-west main line, originally the Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad, which became the first link in the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne & Chicago - known simply as the Ft. Wayne - PRR's first through route to the West. This line was leased by PRR and subsequently became a major trunk line of Lines West before returning to direct PRR ownership. The three lines radiating north from this backbone to Erie, Ashtabula and Cleveland had the obvious purpose of reaching Lake Erie, initially to haul coal to the Lakefront, and subsequently iron ore tonnage from Great Lakes boats to the mills of Youngstown, Weirton, Wheeling, Pittsburgh and other heavy industrial locations in the Ohio River Valley and its tributaries. The lines running south to Yellow Creek and Marietta, along with the Akron Branch, complete the network connecting Lake Erie to the Ohio River and other cities in Ohio as well as tapping the coalfields in the east cenportion of the state. The various facilities - midsize city and small town stations, towers, yards and more depicted in this volume support the diverse operations of PRR through the area. They also reveal the beof an interesting characteristic of east-west lines running through the Midwest - espeeast of Chicago - the crossing of these routes by a multitude of north-south lines, mostly beto other railroads.
