Quality Antique Oil Painting
Portrait of a Dog- Wolfhound? Deerhound?
E. Lelievre 1891
A quality painting of a faithful dog that dates to the late 19th Century. We are sadly no expert on dog breeds but it does look to us like an Irish Wolfhound or Scottish Deerhound. The painting is French- there was a large tradition of importing British breeds into France during the 19th Century. The work is signed with monogram lower right and is further feintly inscribed verso "Lelievre. E." which could be for the listed French artist Eugene Lelievre 1856-1945 who is recorded as having painted dogs.
Provenance- Private collection, Lisieux.
Age- 1891Size- 7 by 9.75 inches approx (175 x 245 mm) including thin slip frame.
Medium- Oils on wooden panel.
Frame- Original gold coloured slip frame, some knocks and missing plaster, offered free with the painting. Condition- We would be happy to hang this one as found. There is however a little dirt in places and some thinner paint areas most probably by design.
Signature- Lower right. Belvoir Fine Art Statement
