This captivating but disturbing albumen image shows the bodies of 8 to 10 Confederate soldiers in an open field with a line of woods in the background.
Timothy O’Sullivan took a number of photographs of dead Confederate soldiers on the Gettysburg Battlefield. It seems that for some reason the burial of the enemy dead had been interrupted for a few days and O’Sullivan and his crew arrived at the battlefield to find the bodies gathered on open ground and in the process of decomposition as seen in the Stereoview offered here.
The example of this exceptionally rare Civil War Photograph that is offered here is copyright 1864 by the publisher - Alexander Gardner of Washington, D. C. The Stereoview measures approx. 7” by 3 1/2”.
This exceptionally rare and historically important, Civil War Battlefield Stereoview is in very good condition. It is mounted on its original flat, light yellow colored mount. The Photographs themselves are clean and crisp and exhibit sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality - qualities seldom found in examples of this View. There is some minor wear to the Images at the vertical center line of the view. The Card Mount is edge worn and soiled. The stereo effect is excellent when viewed with a stereoviewer.
An exceptionally rare and historically important, 1860’s Civil War Stereoview Photograph of Dead Confederate Soldiers on the Battlefield at Gettysburg and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
