SUPERB ANTIQUE HANDMADE SOLID MAHOGANY SOLITAIRE BOARD PLUS 33 ANTIQUE MARBLESDescription: An interwar period (c.1937) scratch built solitaire board made of solid mahogany, supplied with 33 glass marbles of different types and ages.The board is rectangular with a compartment to one side to hold used marbles. The underside of the board has been inscribed with the rules of the game, together with the maker's/owner's initials 'BH' and the date May 1937, as follows:'SOLITAIRE. RULES O...F PLAY. PLACE 33 MARBLES ON BOARD. REMOVE ANY ONE MARBLE. THEN MOVE ANY MARBLE SEPARATED BY ONE FROM VACANT HOLE. REMOVE MARBLE SKIPPED OVER. THE OBJECT BEING TO TAKE ALL BUT ONE, LEAVING THE LAST MARBLE IN THE HOLE VACANT AT THE START. ONLY MOVE IN STRAIGHT LINES OR AT RIGHT ANGLES.' The marbles (mostly contemporary in date to the board), include: 3 white opaline examples, 2 brown glass, 3 blue glass, 2 green glass, 2 swirled clear glass (one orange, one blue), 3 multi-coloured examples including a good handmade Victorian Joseph's Coat example. The remainder are all cat's eye examples of different colours.
