Antique Black Americana 1857 Hand Written Plantation Slavery Sales Invoice - Gripping Historical Document from Pre-Civil War America - Dark Period of America Hand written on early ruled paper Basically a sales invoice, including the property and all included in the sale 200 acres of land with 70 acres cleared Included are 4 Slaves, a 33 year old Man named Alfred, a 22 year old pre...gnant Woman named Nancy, a 7 year old Boy named George, a 5 year old Girl named Fanny (described as "well grown"), and a 2 year old Boy named Jack (described as "mulatto") Also included are 20 heads of cattle, 2 yoke oxen, 1 wagon, 100 hogs, 3 horses, 100 bushels of corn + 100 lbs of fodder, as well as plantation tools Total Sale Price Signed by a G.W. Murray Paper measures approx. 7-3/4" x 9-7/8" The text on the bottom reads "The above "Ns" are all No. 1, and the woman will have another child, if nothing happens in about 2 Months. The buildings aren't fine, but comfortable. There is a separate garden & variety of fruit trees, including apples-peaches-quinces. For the above property, I will take the prices annexed, giving time on one half, till 1st of January 1858 with interest thereon at 10 percent. The hole will have to be endorsed with good security. I am willing to keep 20 acres in the S. West corner including buildings-garden-orchard-will H at $20 per acre. This document is about 161 years old. It reflects a terrible time in American History where people were treated as property and a commodity to be sold at will. In today's time, historical pieces like this should serve to remind us that this indeed happened, that the brutality did exist. Document is in overall good condition for its age. Shows some mild edge wear, with a few tears along the edges and some small holes scattered throughout. Paper shows moderate staining, and has two creases from being folded in the past. Majority of the writing is clearly legible, with only a couple of spots obscured. Comes in more modern time period frame that also depicts its used age with some scratches as depicted in the photos. Anyone is welcome to come inspect this item in person while listing is active. Shipping is $12.95 for this item Additional: On provenance. It was acquired from antique dealer in Clearwater, Florida. The frame is completely sealed, and has been sealed for a very long time. Only way to check it would be to damage the frame or cut the antiquated paper from the back of it. Due diligence reflects Murray in Colleton County, SC listed as slaveholder in that time frame.
Ironically, The first Black South Carolina Representative was a young man named George Washington Murray from Colleton County, SC. or Sumter Co. SC. His recorded birth date on record is in 1853, which according to that would have been 4 years old in 1857. Of course record keeping for anyone, including slaves in that time frame was poorly kept - Many slaves had taken the names of slave holders in the day. Records indicate that no names are listed for Rep. Murray's parents, as he was born into slavery for his first 13 years of life. This document indicates the sale of a young boy 7 years of age, named George.
Other Murray slaveholders of that time period were also located in Columbia Co., Ga, -- Leon Co., Fl. -- Lincoln Co., Ga. -- Lowndes Co., Al. --Jackson Co., Ar., & Sumter Co., SC - Believe Rep. Murray was born in Sumter Co., SCRecords field offices of state of SC record A freed person on 8/10/1865 named Nancy from Colleton District, St. George's Parish - Also Fanny on 8/10/1865, & Jack on 8/10/65 - George & Alfred were no longer documented in St. Geroge's Parish and may have been relocated to other Counties, as George's records depict Sumter County, SC.
This is an extremely interesting document that would deserve much more due diligence by someone, of that dark time of this Nation's history - Document most likely that of South Carolina Origin
