Printed text on the front of the card mount identifies the Stereoview as being from Mathew Brady's series of Views titled "The War For the Union". The image is... titled below the images on the card mount “1130. Magazine in Battery Rogers on the Potomac”. There is printed text on the reverse that reads the same.
The Stereoview depicts a pile of massive cannon 15” cannonballs along with the powder house inside the Union Battery. The breach of one of the Battery’s 15” Guns can be seen in the background. Battery Rogers was one of the fortified Artillery emplacements that protected Washing D. C. from attack via the Potomac River.
This Photograph was taken by Mathew Brady and first published by E. & H. T. Anthony & Co. Brady's negatives were obtained by John C. Taylor of Hartford, Connecticut who republished some of the views (including this one) in the years following the War. It carries the imprint of the publisher – Taylor & Huntington of Hartford.
This very rare and original, 1860’s Civil War Stereoview Photo is in very good condition. The right hand Photograph has a tight tear at the top edge but otherwise the Images are clean and crisp and well preserved exhibiting sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The Card Mount has some light edge wear only. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the content and condition of this rare Civil War Stereoview Photograph.
