1927 banquet celebrating his historic flightRare original silver gelatin panoramic photo of a banquet given in Charles A. Lindbergh's honor in Concord, New Hampshire, July 25, 1927, captioned in the negative "Reception and Banquet to . . . Col. Charles A. Lindbergh, Concord, N.H., July 25, 1927" and bearing the photographer's identification "#2, General Studios, 109 Stuart St., Boston, " 18-3/4" x 9-1/4", housed under glass in the orig...inal oak frame measuring 19-3/4" x 10-1/4" overall. Mild wear to frame; a few small isolated spots of loose soiling under glass; a few small areas of subtle unevenness to emulsion (possibly from moisture; not affecting tone or sharpness in the least, and visible only from an angle); otherwise very good, attractive condition overall, with excellent contrast and clarity, the original dust seal on the reverse mostly intact and undisturbed (not examined outside frame).New Hampshire fetes the celebrated aviator just two months after his epochal transatlantic flight. After quickly penning (with help from a ghostwriter) a "memoir" of his history-making flight, Lindbergh took his airplane, The Spirit of St. Louis, on a three-month tour of the United States sponsored by the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. Beginning in July 1927, Lindbergh visited 82 cities and was seen in person by an estimated thirty million individuals--about a quarter of the country's population.Lindbergh's visit to Concord, New Hampshire was his fifth stop on the tour, after New York, Hartford, Providence, and Boston. (Though the original itinerary had called for a stop in Portland, Maine, on that date, the schedule was adjusted when Lindbergh discovered that the Portland airport was fogged in.) Upon landing the Spirit of St. Louis at the Concord Airport at 1:44 p.m., Lindbergh was greeted by some 40, 000 onlookers. Before departing for the banquet, he addressed the crowd, noting that "This airport can still be improved in many ways. . . . In the future it will bring you considerable air commerce. . . ."In addition to Lindbergh himself as the guest of honor, the banquet included remarks and addresses by toastmaster George A. Foster; Mayor Fred N. Marden; Hon. Frank P. Tilton, Acting Governor; John W. Peterson, President of the Chamber of Commerce; and Hon. George H. Moses, U.S. Senator. The photo, taken from an elevated vantage point, pictures hundreds of individuals seated at long, food-laden tables; it would seem that the room was at full (or, more likely, more than full) capacity, with very little room to move and many spectators standing against the walls. Several of the attendees wear the distinctive, specially printed, heart-shaped souvenir badge (now a collectible in its own right) reading "The Hearts of New Hampshire Welcome 'Lindy'." Lindbergh himself, several inches taller than the other dignitaries, can be seen standing on the bunting-draped dais at the top edge of the image, to the right of the white column at left.Rare and very possibly a unique survival; I was unable to locate a single other example of this image. A true treasure for the advanced collector of Lindberghiana or aviation history!PAYMENT/SHIPPING: Successful U.S. bidder pays for carefully packed and insured Parcel Select shipping (international bidders: inquire for rates); PayPal.
