1/6 PLATE DAGUERREOTYPE BY GURNEY OF A FANCY GENTLEMAN - IN MINTY OCTAGONAL UNION CASE - The quality of a Jeremiah Gurney plate is unmistakable, as in this very unusual octagonal portrait of a fancy dressed gent. The sixth plate just happens to be resealed by the previous owner and legendary collector, Mr. Julian Wolfe. You have to love this handsome fellas large brimmed hat, tiny bow tie and his gilded pinky-ring. The razor sharpness of this fine effort is astonishing each time you ve...iw him in this minty thermoplastic Union case. Gurney was listed at 349 Broadway in NYC between 1858-1860 which helps to date this image to his last studio location. Good luck to all my clientele adding this octagonal cased gent by one of the Daguerreian Masters to your collection. CONDITION: Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. As I mentioned above, the sixth plate was professionally resealed by the long time collector, Julian Wolfe. The unusual shaped plate contains magnificent contrast, tonal range, subtle tinting and expert sharpness. I have included two closeup images shot at extreme angles to reveal several spots on the plate, which you can see from viewing straight are barely visible. A few minor specks of dust can also be seen beneath the glass. Note: The spot on his pinky-ring is from the gilding applied and not an imperfection. The minty Union case retains tight hinges, the working clasp and a gorgeous maroon velvet pillow. The exterior has no cracks or chips, with only a few mares to the cases surface as the only minor cosmetic wear I can find. A truly spectacular cased daguerreotype by a famous artist would beautifully adorn anyone's collection of 19th Century hard plates.
