Photo Print: RMS Britannic At H&H Shipyard Surrounded By Dummy Warships, 1914
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:28440536 |
During the early stages of WWI, the builders at the Harland & Wolff Shipyard in Belfast decided to protect their investment and surround the RMS Britannic with dummy warships to give the impression she was well protected. Later that year, the Royal Mail Ship Britannic became His Majesty's Hospital Ship Britanni...c and it never saw commercial service.
In the early morning hours of November 21, 1916, while heading to the Mediterranean to pick up sick and wounded allied soldiers, the HMHS Britannic was steaming at full speed (around 21 knots) into the Kea Channel when she struck a mine laid a few days earlier by the German U-73 and sank in only 55 minutes.
The HMHS Brittanic is now the largest liner on the ocean floor compliments of German atrocities during WWI.
Note the funnels of the RMS Olympic can be seen distant on the other side already being converted into a troopship.
