When the mines played out, the Mary Murphy Mineabout four miles from St. Elmo was the last to close in 1910, and both Alpineand St. Elmo became ghost towns. The San Isabel National Forest completelysurrounds Alpine and St. Elmo. The first cabin was built in Alpine, Colorado in1877, and by 1880 there was a population of five hundred. The town flourishedas a supply point for other towns further along Chalk Creek. The city had twohotels, a dance hall, twenty-three saloons, a newspaper and all the other usualbusinesses for a growing mining town. About the time Alpine was beginning to bequite a city, the railroad extended itself to St. Elmo, and St. Elmo becameeverything Alpine was and hoped to be. The newspaper, the banks and mostbusinesses packed up and moved to St. Elmo.
