Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:2863778 | Photo Type: Daguerreotype |
This stylish man doesn’t look like an aristocrat. Rather, he looks bohemian or like a well-dressed sailor; someone who’s seen a bit of the world. He projects a serious demeanor, and his hat is tilted quite deliberately.
SIZE. Sixth plate.
CONDITION. Resealed (not by us). Stain by his neck. Light rubbing all over.
APPEARANCE. Excellent contrast. Blue solarization (which some of us really like!). Great attitude. Also, a lesson in style....
THE CASE.
RARE LYRE-THEMED CASE? Nineteenth Century Photographic Cases and Wall Frames, by Paul Berg, shows this case in quarter plate size (VERY RARE, 4-132, 'National Portrait Gallery, ' page 358) and ninth plate size (RARE, 4-99, 'Lyre, ' page 380), attributing both to E. Anthony. This is a sixth plate case, and Berg compares it to a similar Lyre themed case by Mathew B. Brady (4-44, 'M.B. Brady Lyre, ' page 371), but this case is decidedly different. So this sixth plate size is not depicted.
SIZE. As mentioned above, sixth plate.
CONDITION. Light wear. Original spine. Missing clasp and hook. Must use force to close tightly, so slight warpage as is common with these early cases.
UNUSUAL HEXAGON PATTERN TO MAT. This is similar to the early pebbled mats, but a bit more intricate.
