1889 AMERICAN YACHT / YACHTING VOLUME OF PHOTOS BY STEBBINS " YACHT PORTRAITS "
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:2864013 |
This outstanding Volume measur...es approx. 12 1/2” by 7” and begins with a one page introductory which is followed by a table of contents listing the 75 Yachts pictured in the Volume. The following 75 leaves are printed on a high quality, heavy weight paper stock with a single Yacht Portrait per leaf printed on one side only. The Photographs capture each ship under full sail often cutting through the water at great speed. These are the great yachts of Yachting’s Golden Age which are made all the more impressive by the outstanding artistry of the photographer.
The Yacht Photographs of N. L. Stebbins constitute one of the largest and historically important collection of images of their type in existence and represent a historical record of the majority of the important Pleasure Craft of the Golden Age of American Yachting. The first collection of Stebbins Yacht Photographs were published in the Viewbook which was followed by two other books titled "Yacht Portraits" (Boston Photogravure Company, 1889) and "The New Navy of the United States" (New York: Outing Publishing, 1912). A major collection of Stebbins original photographs is held by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities in Boston.
The Volume is sumptuously bound in its original and quite beautiful, gilt decorated, pebbled brown leather. The binding is in very good condition - sound and intact with some surface wear to the leather. All edges are gilt. The interior pages are complete, tight and exceptionally well preserved. The photographic plates are printed on heavy weight, high quality stock and the printing process is of the very highest quality. All plates are present - clean and crisp with no tears, repairs or physical damage of any kind. At the present time we can find no examples of this very rare Volume being offered for sale either on line or in a major bookseller's catalog nor could we uncover any recent sale records. Many years ago we know this scarce work sold in the $500 to $750 range but it has apparently become even more difficult to find today.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges: The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.
