Ship Weight: 3.00 lbs 0.00 oz  Founded in 1905 by brothers Frank L. and John W. Fenton, the Fenton Art Glass Company ranked among the world's foremost producers of handmade art glass.  For many years Fenton was the largest manufacturer of handmade colored glass in the United States, and the company was renowned for innovative glass colors as well as hand-painted decorations on pressed and blown glassware.

For more than a century, Fenton developed new colors and patterns, including items enhanced with hand-painted floral decorations and 22K gold accents.  Fenton glass appeals to many types of people.  Over the years, this appeal has led to the company's success and longevity.  Almost all of the hundreds of handmade glass factories that once existed in the United States, including Fenton,  are no longer in the business of producing handmade glassware.   Each piece of Fenton glass was handmade by skilled artisans, using centuries old techniques.

The results are outstanding works of art.  Being handmade, no two Fenton pieces are exactly the same and no piece is "machine-made" perfect.  Each piece has it's own unique character comprised of the individual skills of many glass workers and decorators that worked on the piece along with the individual tools and molds used to make the piece.  Once you have watched a glass worker gather a molten glob glass from a pot and start it on its journey passing from worker to worker to be transformed into a  piece of handmade glass you can truly appreciate its uniqueness and true beauty.  Fenton Art Glass Company was one of the largest manufacturers of handmade colored glass in the United States.

The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 by Frank L. Fenton and his brother John W. Fenton in an old glass factory building in Martins Ferry, Ohio. They began by painting decorations on glass blanks made by other glass manufacturers. Soon, being unable to get the glass they needed, they decided to produce their own glass. The first glass from the new Fenton factory in Williamstown, West Virginia, was made on January 2, 1907.

Frank L. Fenton's desire to develop new and unusual colors helped to keep Fenton in the forefront of the handmade art glass industry. During the years from 1905 to the 1920's, Fenton design was heavily influenced by the artists at Tiffany and Steuben. In late 1907, Fenton introduced "Iridescent" glass. This glass, now known as "Carnival" glass, is a popular collectible today.

During the 1930's and 1940's, Fenton produced practical items, such as mixing bowls and tableware to get through the depression and WWII shortages. They continued working on developing a wide array of new colors. In the late 1940's, the top three members of the Fenton management team died, leaving Frank M. Fenton, age 33, and Wilmer C. (Bill) Fenton, age 25, to step in and take over as President and Vice President. In spite of other glass factories closing at a rapid rate, Frank and Bill led the Fenton factory through significant American growth for the next 30 years.

In 1986, the leadership of the company passed on to the third generation, with George W. Fenton, Frank M's son, taking over as President.  Fenton family members worked together along with skilled glass making employees to create handmade glass artistry that is loved by collectors around the world. Fenton is known for its beautiful colors and patterns. Each piece of glass is an artistic creation by skilled glass workers and decorators.

The Fenton Art Glass Company announced  (August 9, 2007) that it would cease its operations over the next few months.

"This decision was difficult, " company President George W. Fenton said. "Since the announcement in June regarding our efforts toward financial restructuring, we took many steps to try to continue the company's operations. Ultimately, those efforts were not successful."  However, in December of that year, the company announced in a press release that "due to an unexpected buying frenzy, " the company would stay open at least until spring of 2008. The future past that point was uncertain.

After flirting with financial difficulties for a number of years, this family-owned company officially closed its doors in 2011. As the largest producer of handmade colored glass in the country, the Fenton factory was the hub of tourism in its neck of West Virginia by offering facility tours, a yearly tent sale, and a museum filled with beautiful glass to visitors who will surely miss this popular destination.

In 2011 Fenton announced that they were having to cease operation after years of struggling and trying to maintain a profitable business.  The Fenton Art Glass Company was the last of the great handmade glass companies of North America to remain in business.   They celebrated their 100th year in operation in 2005.  It is sad that government regulations, rising cost of materials, and labor, used in the production of their products coupled with increased competition from China, Spain and other countries caused the USA to finally loose it's last great handmade glass company.  The Fenton factory was the hub of tourism in its neck of West Virginia by offering facility tours, a yearly tent sale, and a museum filled with beautiful glass to visitors who will surely miss this popular destination.

The remaining production assets of the Fenton Art Glass Company were sold at auction.

Currently the Fenton Gift Shop Hand Decorates limited quantities of  glass purchased from other glass companies (many using molds originally owned by  Fenton).  As far as we know the only glass items that Fenton is producing is Glass Beads used in production of Jewelry.  “International Buyer" Please Note:Your country may or may not impose additional charges on your purchase.
