This magnum socketed lamp was in the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley's bedroom (alright, not this lamp, but an identical one) and can be seen on the Graceland tour. Massive, turned wood with silver and gold leaf, and milk glass diffuser. Original shade not existent, but was a similar style silver, with wide gold bands top and bottom of the large drum.
Measures over 37 inches to top of milk gla...ss, with drum shade would be over 45 inches! A real statement piece, this is glam, this is Hollywood Regency at its finest!
Condition is excellent vintage, all parts are in good working order, the glass is clean and free from cracks or chips - perfect, the surface shows age as they all do.
James Mont was the bad boy of interior design. Originally designing interiors for the New York branch of the mafia, his first customer was Lucky Luciano. A brawler, he once was sent to Sing Sing after being found guilty of assaulting a lampshade designer so badly she was hospitalized for two weeks, he would have gotten 5 - 10 years, but the attack was so humiliating the victim didn't make it through the trial before committing suicide.. Although known for his Chinoisserie, his style was broad and of only the best quality.
Born Demetrios Pecintoglu in Istanbul in 1904 it's thought he studied art and design in Paris before he came to the US in 1924, though most of his life is shrouded in mystery.
