Description: This is a vintage (circa 1909) real photo postcard entitled, "Gunboat Wolverine, Michigan City." The card depicts the historic USS Wolverine in the waters of Lake Michigan near Michigan City, Indiana. The USS Wolverine was originally the USS Michigan, built and launched in 1843 in Erie, Pennsylvania. The ship was the Navy's first iron-hulled ship and was a sidewheel steamer. The ship served on the Great Lakes during the Civil War. The USS Michigan was rename...d the USS Wolverine in 1905, and was decommissioned in 1912, when it was turned over to the Pennsylvania Naval Militia. Publisher/Photographer: Unknown.Postmark: None.Text: "To Michigan City.
