The National Tube Division of United States Steel in Lorain, Ohio dates from the 1950s. National Tube Company, a subsidiary of United States Steel Company, purchased the Lorain steel mill in 1903. The mill was established by the Johnson Steel Company in 1895. It produced steel pipe and rails. As the company grew, European immigrants flocked to Lorain to work at the mill. The ethnic mix of the city expanded during World War II, when Puerto Rican workers were recruited to work the mills ...due to a labor shortage. The plant continued to operate under a variety of names through the twentieth century. In 2004, the mill was operated by Republic Technologies, Inc.Vintage National Tube Co.
