Offered for sale is a Dutch silver box from the Netherlands. These boxes were typically used by ladies with a sponge that was perfumed to avoid the smells of the big cities in the 18th century. However, these boxes also could serve the purposes of holding patches, spice or snuff. This box is decorated on the lid with a depiction of Jesus with the Samaritan woman at the well. It has stamped Regence decoration around its side. It is hallmarked underneath for... Amsterdam, either 1721 or 1745. The maker's mark of "IG" or "IC" in a heart is listed in Voet around 1725, 1734-1736. The box stands about 1 inch tall and is about 1 inch in diamater. The piece weighs .5 ounce or 15 grams.
