This beautiful old quilt measures 89" by 71" across and weighs 5 lbs un-boxed: it is heavy, considering its size and thickness, due to the fact that instead of having a somewhat "fluffy" cotton bating, the makers put inside some kind of striped blanket that is visible on pic # 9. That must be a dense cotton or wool blanket, we don't know what material is made of, as the quilt has no openings that could allow us to spy inside.
The pattern does not appear as such in the Encyclopedia o...f Applique by Barbara Brackman, so we don't know if it has a known name. We believe the "flowers" represent buds. Each one has the clearly visible pink or orange petals, plus a second layer, white for the pink buds, yellow for the orange ones, that was added at the edge of each flower. Those additions are visible on close-ups # 7 and 8.
