Rare vintage postcard of the old Hotel Warner in Chicago. I've been watching Ebay for almost 20 years and have seen 2 or 3 of these, that's it! Kind of neat little accessory to any Black Sox Collection, one I doubt many have in it.
There is another Warner Hotel postcard out there, but it's not the "Real Photo" postcard.
What is neat about this Hotel is it is where the gamblers met with the players while in Chicago, and the rea...son it was at this location is because several of the out of town Chicago White/Black Sox players lived in the Hotel Annex during the season, then went back to their regular homes in the offseason, but this hotel was right near Comiskey Park. And this postcard shows that Annex(the longer building), which was behind the hotel(the taller building). So a neat picture into where the players were staying. Great neat little piece of history.
The Hotel Warner from a Google search:
"It was Gandil who spoke to the teammates he felt were the most likely to be interested in the proposition — Eddie Cicotte, Swede Risberg, Happy Felsch and Buck Weaver were among his first targets.
The group met with Sullivan and the notorious gambler Arnold Rothstein in the Warner Hotel and asked for $80, 000 upfront. Rothstein, ever the low-baller, guaranteed $10, 000."
"Sullivan and Evans went to Chicago, where Evans, posing as “Rachie Brown” (a small-time New York City gambler) to the players, handled much of the wagering end of the Fix. Reports on Evans/Brown’s involvement vary. Black Sox Lefty Williams testified that Sullivan and “Brown” met the players at Chicago’s Warner Hotel before the Series, to hammer out the details of the Fix."
