Brooklyn, New York: Hermes AthleticClub. A ledger or record-book of this club, kept in a Progress Reversible NoteBook with ruled leaves; one side used only. With about 45 pages of writtenmaterials, entirely hand-written, excepting the typed 1-page membership list(with ms additions & corrections). Th...e President was M.T. Dougherty, Vice Pres.O.S. Eldredge; Sec. M.R. Kuhn, Treas. K. McVaugh. Accordingto the Constitution and By-Laws the "...purpose is to furnish athletic andsocial amusements for its members...limited to 25 members...no person can beadmitted to the H.A.C. unless he is 14 years of age..." Meetings were tobe held at member residences in alphabetical order; the entrance fee to theclub was 50 cents and dues were 10c per week while the club was in session. Newmembers had to be proposed, seconded and elected unanimously. Theclub formed various teams within the membership and also provided 'articles'that were mutually owned for the club's use. "...A man who is picked forthe Base ball team may wear HERMES on his shirt but to wear the winged H.A.C.he must play 50% of the games...(similar rules applied to the footballteam)...a man may win his letters if he wins a race skating or running providedhe skates or runs under the Hermes name….”Therewas a hockey team and junior teams were organized as well. Information in theminutes, which are more extensive for 1904 and dwindle to a couple of lines in1905 contain election and new admissions notes, dues collections, motionsproposed, carried, defeated; also research for club dinners, events, clubrooms. Occasionallya bit of humor comes through in the reportage: '..Mr. Kuhn wished to know whatwas to be done about the Hockey Team, but he is still wishing as no informationwas given...Mr. Eldredge made the motion that the secretary write a note to Mr.John D. Rockerfeller (sic) asking him (Rockerfeller) to give the club a helpinghand in the financial way...Mr. Hayward made motion that if any one disfiguredhis vote otherwise than folding it the vote would be discarded...." Interesting early 20th century Brooklyn NY youngmen's athletic club activities & history. Approx. 7 1/2" x 9 3/4"size; tired green cloth over boards binding. Handwritten titles in dull red onfront cover; several leaves loose; wear, soiling chipping. Binding scruffy;contents generally clean, written very legibly in ink and in goodcondition.
