Case Condition: The case looks to be in VERY GOOD or better cosmetic condition- this is an alloy mixture type of case and looks to be only showing minor wear with a decent looking patina over most of the case finish- please see the photos!! NOTE: I do sometimes have trouble getting the case back or bezel to fit onto the chassis of the watch- not sure what the issue is here, I don’t see any grooves that I’m “missing”.
Case Metal: Presumed to be an alloy mixture case throughout
Dial Condition: This ORIGINAL late 1890s Robert H. Ingersoll & Bross dial does show its share of wear as can be seen in the photos. Importantly, the “yellow” signature and other information still shows up decently well. Because of the general dial finish wear, I don’t think that it can really be rated much higher than FAIR PLUS or perhaps a very low “good”.
Movement Type: I have seen the back wind style of early dollar watch but never this style of highly damskeened (decorative machined engravings) back plate pendant wind / slide-button set Ingersoll mechanism that must have dated from about 1895 to maybe around 1900. To set the time you slide the button down its track and hold it at the other end of it’s sprung shut resting position and then you can set the time.
Working / Non-Working: This watch does wind and “pin” or “rim” (see above) set the time smoothly and the best that I can get this watch to do is TICK WEAKLY for anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours at a time. I don’t think it’s possible that it has any chance of keeping good time right now. It’s time for some watchmaker time for this old beauty- these old zero jewel movements can still run well but typically require servicing / maintenance work a bit more often than fully jeweled gear train movements!
Extras: Here for your bidding pleasure is the pictured late 1890s era Robert H. Ingersoll & Bros TRIUMPH model Open Face style 18 Size pocketwatch unit- complete with the deluxe knurled case and original black dial!! The watch does pendant wind and “button” or “lever” set the time smoothly and will tick weakly and run for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours at a time. I never made any effort to run a timekeeping test because I was sure it had no chance of really being a good timekeeper based on how slowly the beat of the watch sounded. The signature information on the original BLACK dial on this watch is all legible but other areas of the dial seem a bit more faded than dead center- this is a tough dial to give a cosmetic rating to- please see the many photos. The case is plenty handsome and one that I have not seen before on an Ingersoll “Dollar” Pocketwatch- usually their cases were less substantial than this one but I believe this to be an original Ingersoll case as there is an entry under “Ingersoll Triumph” in the Shugart / Engle Price Guide that describes this case EXACTLY….. And in 2004’s Shugart / Engle Price Guide the LOW book was 200 USD for this RARE early Robert H. Ingersoll & Sons TRIUMPH model with the fancy case!! I have priced this watch to $ELL with a ROCK BOTTOM low opening bid price and there is NO RESERVE!!!!Payment is due immediately upon purchase.
