Vintage ESL Electro Sonic Laboratories P1 Phono Cartridge Ortofon
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:29704700 |
Here's a 1950's ESL P1 professional phono cartridge in its original case and box, with its original clear plastic stylus guard, and its original warranty certificate (the serial number on the warranty certificate matches the serial number on the underside of the cartridge). The P1 is considered by many hi-fi aficionados to be the best mono phonograph cartridge ever made. It was manufactured by Ortofon and imported to the US by Electro-Sonic Laboratories in Long Island City, New York. I believe it's a moving coil cartridge and that it will require a phono preamp with sufficient gain.
This cartridge comes from a private audio engineering museum in western North Carolina, and it's one of dozens of vintage audio items from the museum that I'll be listing over the next few months. I'm offering these pieces "as found." Most of them work, but some don't. In all cases, I'll try to provide an accurate assessment of electrical condition and suitability for use based on limited testing. I don't have the time, energy or skill to repair the pieces that aren't working, so please read the descriptions carefully to make sure you get what you're expecting.
Condition of the cartridge appears to be excellent; it may even be new old stock, as you can see in the photographs. I have no way determine the condition of the stylus, but I've included two high-resolution photographs so you can try to judge for yourself. The cartridge was found in the basement of the museum, in a box of NOS cartridges made by Shure, Ortofon, Stanton, Audio Dynamics, etc.
Shipping weight, properly packed, will be about 1 lb.
