Offered for sale is a pair of Jensen X-20 Slim Compact speakers. They were introduced in 1964 with an MSRP of $100/pair. Each speaker contains a specially designed 5 1/2" woofer and two Jensen 3" tweeters. They have a frequency response down to 65 Hz and deliver surprisingly good bass. Very efficient, produces adequate room sound levels with as little as 1 watt of power. Cross over frequency of 4, 000 Hz. Made to wall hang, much like a picture. The dimensions are 12 7/8"H X 15 3/8"W an...d only 2 5/8"D. Veneered with real walnut. Rated at 8 ohms.When I first acquired these speakers they were in great cosmetic condition but did have some issues. The L-pads, turned all the way down muted all three speakers. Not sure if that is how they were designed. Both speakers just didn't sound right, seemed like their was no midrange. The wire wall hanger was frayed and very sharp. There was no knobs on the L-pads. Took the back covers off and the cross over consisted of an inductor and a 2uF capacitor. Removed the capacitors and measured them. One measured 5.3uF and the other measured 6.7uF. Seems to me the cross over is designed using a 2uF capacitor and the higher value capacitors would effect the cross over frequency. I removed the cross overs and wired the woofers directly and then built a high pass filter for the tweeters using a 3.3uF capacitor and a 12 ohm 5 watt resistor. This combination created a cross over frequency of exactly 4, 000 Hz, just like the original specification. Installed a brand new L-pad in each speaker and wired them so they adjusted the high frequency level. I put new wire hangers on the back of each speaker. I used some black knobs from a Kenwood receiver that seemed to match the speaker nicely. I put the speakers back together and listened to them, boy did it make a world of difference. These speakers now sound perfect. The new L-pads work perfect. Don't know how Jensen got such nice and balanced sound out of a speaker less than 3" deep, but they did. I removed all three drivers from each speaker and examined them, they were all in great condition. The wood cabinets and grills are in excellent condition with just some very minor signs of wear and age. When I played them I used a 30 watt Fisher receiver and turned the volume up about two thirds of the way. The speakers produced very loud and distortion free sound that filled the room nicely. These speakers would be perfect for a small to medium sized room using a lower powered amplifier, especially if space is lacking since they actually sound the best when hung on the wall.
