A Griswold bag, also called a Cover Jump in heavy canvas OD # 7 was designed to carry an M1 Garand rifle disassembled into three sections: barrel, stock, and trigger group. The bags were also used to carry the M1 Carbine, a Thompson SMG or a M3 Grease gun. The bag was then attached to the T-5 Parachute harness using a carabiner sewn onto the bag. Wartime pictures also show the bags being wedged behind the harness to make it more comfortable to ...jump with.Many complaints came from Normandy paratroopers who lost precious seconds removing their weapon from the Griswold Bag and assembling and loading the M-1 while enemy troops approached.This example has a full closure TALON zipper. On the rear side is the regulatory marking contract 8300-44 (44 is the manufacturing date) 2650.These bags were distributed to all airborne divisions engaged in Europe (17th, 82nd and 101st AB).
