A crime film directed by Fernando Di Leo was calledMilano Calibro 9 and Argentinian orchestra conductor Luis Enriquez Bacalov andOsanna provided the music for the movie. The resulting album, Milano Calibro 9aka Preludio Tema Varazione Canzona wasn't the actually music for the movie, despite the album saying otherwise. It, in fact, is variants and differentversions of songs used in the film, as well as a bunch of stuff never featuredin the film. "Canzona ("There Will Be Time") and all parts of"Variazione" aren't featured in the film. A different version of"Tema" is used on the film. On the film, there's a scene whereBarbara Bouchet is dancing on the table and there's a song from Osanna notfeatured on any of their albums, it wouldn't be out of place on L'Uomo. Alsothe film actually featured a track from New Trolls' Concerto Grosso Per 1(which Bacalov had a hand in as well), naturally you won't find it on theMilano Calibro 9 album, you have to get Concerto Grosso Per 1. The album was originallyreleased on the Fonit label with the textured gatefold cover. In 1973 the albumreceived an American release on the Peters International label, a label morefocused on world music than rock, but rock was still in the label's radarscope, and the company frequently imported albums into the States, as you mighthave ran across imported LPs with the "Peters International" label onthe cover. The American version features no gatefold, but easier to read text(white print, as opposed to black like on the Italian release, which is hard toread against the psychedelic background), which was an actual improvement, since the American LP was generally inferior. Also the American version statesthat Lino Vairetti is credited to Mellotron, where the Italian version doesn't, since he didn't have one yet (their following album Palepoli very much featuresthe Mellotron). It's been said once the American version became available, record dealers stopped importing the Italian version (or I believe PetersInternational stopped importing it once they made it available in the States).Peters also released Landscape of Life in the States (again, no gatefold, unlike the Italian version), but mysteriously they didn't make Palepoliavailable here. I understand why L'Uomo didn't get released here as they hadn'tbeen established yet. The whole album is basicallya collection of short pieces showing off the talents of the band. Orchestra isprovided by Luis Enriquez Bacalov, the same guy responsible for New TrollsConcerto Grosso Per 1 (and their 1976 sequel, Concerto Grosso Nr. 2) and RDM'sContaminazione (and its English-language counterpart, Contamination). So likethose albums mentioned, this is another excellent combination of classicalorchestra with '70s prog, in this case, a Jethro Tull, King Crimson, VdGGinfluenced type of prog. Dominated by loud saxes, flutes (Jethro Tull-like), synthesizers (the ARP 2600), aggressive guitars, and drums."Preludio" starts off with piano, then the orchestra kicks in, beforethe band gets in to an aggressive jam. "Tema" is a nice, laid-backclasically-influenced piece, dominated by piano and ARP 2600. Then you have"Variazione" which are divided in to several parts. The first partconsists of aggressive jams, dominated by Elio D'Anni's saxes (he played twosaxes at once, like VdGG's David Jackson or Colosseum's Dick Heckstall-Smith), before mellowing out with some more mystical passages dominated by quiteelectric guitar and vibes. This part most points to their following album, Palepoli. Then the vocals kick in, which are in English, which shows the band'sweak point and that is not singing in their native language. Luckily vocals arealmost completely absent on this album. The rest of the album consists mainlyof very short pieces that show the trademark Osanna sound, although you wishedthey were longer in order to really let the band soar (luckily that problem wassolved with Palepoli). The final piece, "Canzona" is also called"There Will Be Time", the only other vocal cut on this album. Thisisn't particularly progressive, it's simply a pop number, and really out ofplace on the album. Regardless, this is still a worthwhile album for theItalian prog collector. The only real reason for the four stars is Palepoli iseven better, in my opinion, and the English language vocals, I'm afraid, wasnever the band's strong points (just like PFM) (they solved that problem withPalepoli by being all in Italian). The original luster is very much intact, andthe vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, whichwas usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound onsuch thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do notexpect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording! (c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!! · THE COVER COVER IS NEAR MINT The following flaws orimperfections are noted on the cover: - The cover has a small (1") razor-like line (cut) on theback panel, as if someone attempted to cut away the shrink wrap with a razor, but inadvertently left the mark on the cover as well. The paper slick is intactand no part is missing, but the razor line is visible. - Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (amicroscopic price code written in one corner) (the writing is black on black background and is virtually invisible) NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER ♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫ POSTAGE &SHIPPING: We offer THREE postage rates for both Domesticand International Mail: Media Mail, Priority Mail and Express Mail fordomestic, and First Class, Priority International Mail, and ExpressInternational Mail for international orders.
