Item History & Price
Up for auction today is a vintage Continental miniature safety pen from the 1920sRECORD PENOctagonal Safety Pen
Engine Turned OverlayMade in Italyc.1920s
History
This is a 1920s Continental RECORD retractable safety pen, made in Italy. This pen was made of black hard rubber (ebonite) with a metal gold filled engine turned Checkerboard overlay that is similar to Wahl and Waterman patterns. This is a tiny pen (as evidenced by the photos with 5 pence and 2 EUR coin...s as well as a MB No. 24 alongside it for size comparison - the other pen included in separate listing) and it is a high quality pen that may have been made to be work primarily as jewellery, but it is of course fully functional. These tiny pens are very uncommon due to their delicate construction - not many of them survived.
Item condition
Good vintage condition, with no wear and just one small ping to the overlay as shown in photos - not really noticeable.
The cork seal has been changed and the pen's ink tight. The mechanism advances and retracts the nib as it should.
To fill the pen, one needs to use eyedropper to drop the ink inside the pen while the nib is retracted. Then, holding the pen nib up, the nib is advanced by turning the knob at barrel end. After writing is finished, nib is retracted (holding the pen nib upwards!) and the pen's capped. To uncap the pen, it should also be held with nib pointing upwards.

Nib
14k original Warranted nib. This is a tiny nib, similar to Wahl 0 nib. Fine, flexible, writing with some line variation and ink shading. However, due to the size of this pen and nib and delicate mechanism, I would not recommend it as a daily writer.
