Original Description:
These small axe-hatchets were carried by "woodsmen" who were on foot and therefore didn't want to carry heavy tools.  Very popular with gold prospectors or hunters who needed something to chop smaller limbs but needed to travel light.  Reads "BUN or BON / CAST STEEL / 1849".   Surviving examples of these are extremely rare; most were discarded after moving to civilized areas, and not useable around the farm or needed on horseback.
