A rare and unusual tintype of a small Chinese girl with bound feet known as lotus feet. Wikipedia has a history of the practice you can check out. By the time this photo was created (around 1885), the practice of binding feet was not as prevalent and eventually was discontinued altogether. The photo is believed to have been taken in the United States in a Chinese community (of course). Lotus feet were prized among the elite for hundreds of years. The image itself has seen better days i...t has pockmarks, scuffs and scratches and is a little on the dark side. The image is clear (tho dark) and the feet are well visible in the photo. It has been matted (5x7 inches) and the viewing area is 4 1/2 x 3 inches. Because of the overall fair condition of the image, I believe I am asking a very reasonable price.
